Restoration of the Soldier and Sailors Memorial Arch Moving Forward

The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Arch is a triumphal arch situated at the north entrance of Prospect Park in Brooklyn, NY. Completed in 1892 as an American Civil War Memorial, the arch was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973. The arch is now in a state of disrepair and the interior is no longer open to the public. The Park has recently received funding to renovate the arch and once again open it to the public. Atkinson-Noland & Associates (ANA) worked in cooperation with Prospect Park Alliance and Silman to better understand the current structural condition and construction of the arch, and to provide input to aid in their analysis and repair design. ANA investigated the arch using NDE techniques such a surface penetrating radar, metal detection, and borescope on both the interior and exterior of the arch.

A recent article in The New York Times discusses the investigation technologies used by ANA. An article in the Gothamist further recognizes our services by specifically mentioning our firm.
