Next Wednesday, October 30, Donald will give a lunchtime presentation at Martin|Martin Engineers in cooperation with RMMI.
Since at least the 1970’s, structural engineers in the United States have used calculated, rational methods to design lateral load resisting systems in buildings. However, it is still very common for engineering students to graduate without a single lecture on one of the most common components of lateral systems: masonry shear walls. It’s no wonder that questions and confusion regarding masonry shear walls are abundant among practicing engineers. This presentation will cover both the fundamentals of distributing loads to and designing masonry shear walls and more advanced concepts, such as detailing requirements.
