Evaluation of Existing Structures

Atkinson-Noland & Associates provides services for the evaluation and condition assessment of existing structures, including application of nondestructive, in situ, and load-testing methods for measuring existing states of stress, material properties, structural behavior characteristics, and material uniformity. Engineers at our firm can tailor a diverse suite of nondestructive or in situ material tests to meet the unique needs of every project. Evaluation services may include complete structural assessment, vulnerability analysis, and preparation of recommendations for repair or strengthening where required.

Structural Analysis

Atkinson-Noland & Associates maintains complete structural analysis capabilities, including analysis of frame and structural wall systems under static and dynamic loadings and analysis of structures in steel, reinforced or unreinforced concrete, and masonry. We have up to date finite element capacity to provide linear and nonlinear analysis for civil and structural engineering applications.

Our advanced finite element modeling capabilities can investigate and solve unique and challenging structural problems. Traditional analysis tools are not always suitable for highly complex problems and often result in an inaccurate prediction of structural behavior. Using sophisticated computer models, we can provide accurate structural analysis studies and suitable repair, strengthening, and preservation solutions. Our services include the following:

Laboratory Testing

The lab at Atkinson-Noland & Associates is well equipped to test historic and modern masonry material properties. Work performed includes characterization of brick, block, and stone properties, mortar analysis, anchor strength, and grout development.

Bridge Load Rating

Atkinson-Noland & Associates provides services for evaluation and load rating of existing/historic concrete and masonry arch bridges. Using nondestructive techniques, we have investigated more than 30 masonry and concrete bridges, for which plans were unavailable, to determine "as-built" conditions for rating the bridges. In conjunction with partners Bridge Diagnostics, Inc., we have load tested numerous bridges to obtain deflection and strain data for calibration and verification of Finite Element (FE) models. Using up to date finite element capabilities, Atkinson-Noland's engineering team is able to implement complex 3D FE models of arch bridges and produce accurate load ratings in accordance with current AASHTO provisions.
